GE Fridge not Getting Cold Enough

GE refrigerator not cooling? GE Fridges are very good and usually last for years on end without experiencing any problems at all. If yours is having a hard time staying cold then this guide will help you to find out everything you need to know.

·        This guide is for all GE Fridges.

Common Reasons why your GE Fridge is Not Getting Cold Enough

Some of the many reasons why your GE Fridge is not getting cold enough could be down to:

·        The condenser coils are dirty

·        Your condenser fan motor has broken

·        You are having problems with your evaporator fan

·        There’s an issue with the start relay

·        Your temperature-controlled thermostat isn’t working

·        Your start capacitor isn’t working

Your Condenser Coils are Dirty

Condenser coils are normally located underneath the fridge. They dissipate heat as the refrigerant passes through. If you have dirty condenser coils, then this won’t dissipate the heat as efficiently. This means that the fridge has to work way harder in order to cool down to the right temperature. If you want to fix this issue, then you need to check the coils to see if they are dirty. If they do happen to be grimy then clean them.

Your Condenser Fan Motor has Broken

The condenser fan motor draws in air through the coils and moves it over the compressor. If you have a fan motor that isn’t working as it should then this could be why your fridge is not cooling properly. If you want to check to see if your fan motor is defective or not, then check the blade for any obstructions. Turn the fan by hand as well. If you find that the blade is not spinning freely then test the motor for continuity. If it does not appear to be working well, then the motor will need to be replaced. The evaporator fan motor will draw air over the cooling coils before circulating it through the fridge. Some models of GE refrigerators have more than one motor. If your fridge only has one motor then it will be located in the freezer section. If the fan is not working, then it will not circulate the cold air to the fridge part. If this happens then you may find that the freezer section is cold, but the fridge is not. If your freezer is not cold, then you may want to hire a freezer repair service.

Your Evaporator Fan Motor has Broken

If you want to determine whether your evaporator fan motor is defective, then try and turn the blades by hand. If you find that the blades do not turn freely then replace the motor. If the motor is noisy, replace it as well. If you find that the motor is not running at all, then now would be the time for you to use a multimeter so you can test the windings to see if they have any continuity.

You have an Issue with your Start Relay

The start relay works alongside the start winding. This triggers the compressor. If your start relay happens to be defective then the compressor might not run. This will lead to your fridge not being cold enough. If you want to find out if your start relay is defective or not then use a multimeter to test for the continuity between the start and run terminal sockets. If the start relay has a smoky, burnt odor then replace it.

Temperature-Controlled Thermostat isn’t Working

The temperature-controlled thermostat will direct the right voltage to the evaporator fan motor, the compressor, and finally, the condenser fan motor. If the thermostat isn’t working as it should then this may stop the fridge from running as it should. If you want to find out if your thermostat is defective or not then rotate it from the lowest setting to the highest one. It’s important that you listen out for a click. If you can hear a click, then there is a high chance that it is not defective. If it does not click then use a multimeter. This could also cause issues, like your ice maker not working too.

Start Capacitor

The start capacitor will provide you with a strong boost of power to the compressor during the initial start-up. If the start capacitor isn’t working, then there is a high chance that the compressor won’t start. As a result, your fridge will not stay cold. If you want to test this then the best way for you to do that would be for you to test it with a multimeter. If you can see that it is defective then your only option would be for you to replace it. A refrigerator repair service can help you here.
